Bikers & Motorist screaming at each other on blogs does nothing, while weekly, someone is killed or seriously injured. Come on People bickering achieves exactly what???

I too do not believe in bickering. I want to hear from people that are also tired of sharing the road. For safety reasons, the only bike that should occupy a full lane of traffic is a mototcycle.

More people are turning to two wheels for commuting and recreation. Cyclists are asserting their rights as never before. In Los Angeles, advocates are pushing for more bike lanes and other road improvements, a cyclists’ bill of rights and more protection from police.

Bikes are for recreation only and if it is used for commuting then maybe it would apply to bagboys at grocery stores going less than one mile. And then on the shoulder.

I’m getting really fed up with news stories that feel it necessary to point this out when it’s very clearly stated in the law that cyclists are NOT REQUIRED to ride in bike lanes when they are present, but ENCOURAGED TO. A cyclist may choose to ride in a “car lane” for pretty much any reason, personal and equipment safety topping the list.

What if the equipment safety is a wobbly tire ? Do they run the bike to the shoulder then, or stop the traffic altogether and change it? I’ve never seen a spare tire carrier for a bike. I know I carry water and a first aid kit but not many tools.

I know that there are times when common sense may dictate that it is silly for a bike rider to wait for things like pedestirans, red lights and cross traffic, given a bikes inherent mobility, but before some one starts bemoaning cyclists rights? Suppose we begin the conversation on the point of the rules of the road? Why even the issue of speeding should be a part of the dialogue as well, this knee jerk reaction to this one reported incident invariably leads to a jerky out come when one stops to consider the totaslity of the traffic violations I observe every day committed by cyclists who seem to think that they are exempted from moving violations, and oh those aggressive attitudes and fat mouths with hand gestures if you call them in thei conduct.

Turner and hooch, you should do some research you moron. Cheryl crow was dumped by lance years ago. But I will have you know that when they were together they did their best to reduce their carbon output unlike you in your hillbilly pick up truck. You are nothing like lance. He would leave your ass in the dust. Oh I know what maybe you could skate after him since you think skates are faster than bikes.

And again, I do not compare myself with a professional cyclist. I do however believe that I am not the only cyclist that believes that the shoulder of a major road is the safest for a bike. If not, then inline skaters and golf carts also has the right to occupy a lane.

golf carts do not travel fast enough to occupy a lane. They are not street legal, but unfortunately bikes are. Sigh.

Turner, it makes zero sense for you to compare yourself or anyone else to Lance. He is like a God to me and my friends. He leaves little to no carbon footprint and enjoys a good life. He is nothing like the rest Ive seen.

I in no way would compare myself to Armstrong. Why even bring up a carbon footprint? Have you not noticed the amount of cars vans and trucks that it takes to equip a racer? And if you think that Cheryl Crow doesn’t fly to the events you have not thought it through. We are talking about the average person here, with daily oblligations to meet, and I personally think that they would be safer on the shoulder. Plus make the highways and feeder roads the commuters are entitled too more serviceable.

Mark, Even Lance Armstrong has sense enough not to take to a road or highway until ALL precautions are put in place to insure safety. Accidents still happen. You are letting a 14″ x 16″ sign dictate your common sense against real life judgement. Do you ever sit on the handle bars and go backwards like you did in high school while sharing ? Why not ? I say share the shoulder and bike trails.

What does command presence mean? You mean you standing up and pedling as fast as you can? Going balls out to catch the car in front of you? Never slowing under 35 mph in a 50 mile lane? The shoulder is the only place you belong. Keep the outside lane for vehicles that can go the distance. Have you always had problems going the distance? Probably. Golf carts would be a far better road partner that you in your spandex on your bike. GET OFF MY ROAD!

I’m a cyclist and a driver. I try to practice courtesy when driving when passing cyclists. Sometimes they do ride a little too far out in traffic which makes for a nervous pass especially with oncoming traffic. I can sense your anger and frustration. Many times when I cycle, I have to be assertive and also command presence, sometimes that means jocking for position or cutting in and out of traffic.
People always want a choice and while some of you may be in a hurry and angry at cyclists for making you late, maybe you should think about leaving earlier. There’s always going to be two sides, but we have to make the best of it.
Either leave your bad attitude at home while driving or get on your bike. 🙂

Why do you say it is futile? If I get more people to agree with me we can put an end to riding on public roads. I think you should ride in the comfort of your local park. Please do not ride on streets any more. I will no longer allow it.
